I run a few facebook pages, blogs and websites (I get bored easily) and I get quite a few messages on my fb trying to befriend me, sell me something or just saying salaams. A few times I've gotten a few angry messages about me ignoring them. Thinking they are nut cases I actually ignore them, turns out that they had private messaged me before but I never got it because facebook has another inbox besides my main inbox and its called "Other" below is a printscreen of it.

SO if you've private messaged me on facebook and I never responded, this is why. The "other" functions as a spam folder I'm assuming.

:) Purple and gold are two colors I've personally NEVER worn but still like to see together. Part of my issue is because I can't stand the Lakers and those are their colors. Its a dislike my whole family shares. DARN YOU LAKERS!

I LOVE seeing animal prints on OTHER people but I can't seem to pull it off so I stopped trying. :( I tend to put together sets that I personally would never wear (because my closet is black and am too lazy to get new stuff). Anyway, for this zebra maxi I wanted to go WILD with bright red, crazy green and obnoxious yellow but it didn't feel right. Those colors only look good when the outfit is put together not in their individual components. Instead I went in the opposite direction, what do you think?

It looks pretty separately but I wonder if put together if it would look too bland?

Four year olds DON'T need lingerie

As Salaamu Aalaykum,

A few years back I had a conversation with a group of women who were upset some Muslims put hijabs on little girls and felt that it was sexualizing her. At the time I didn't have a daughter so I didn't see what the big mess was about. NOW that I do have an 11 month old daughter I put a baby hijab on her when we were visiting a sister's iftar, she looked super cute in it and I LOVED IT! It framed her little chubby cheeks so well and her only 2 teeth at the time shined prominently. I don't put it on her everyday and that was the 2nd time she had worn hijab.

Anyway, while discussing the following article they didn't see anything wrong with a company making lingerie inspired underwear for four year olds. I see THAT as sexualizing little girls!

I don't know what to say other than I REALLY hope no parent purchases these for their daughters as it encourages this behavior.

Peeping tom uses webcam!

I made a post back in January 2011 about the webcam and how it can be used to spy on you and voila some high tech peeping tom was doing just that. He no longer needs to wait patiently outside your bedroom window in rain, sleet or snow, he can do it from the privacy of his own home.

A California computer repair tech was arrested Wednesday for allegedly installing spyware on users Mac laptops giving him access to the computer's webcam...

...The users, mostly female according to Goodrich, would take the laptops into the bathroom while they were undressing and showering, allowing him to take photos of the victims. (LINK)

Protect your hijab even at home from invasive technology. There are a lot of how-tos for hacking a webcam remotely so don't rely on the goodness of other people.

What to do?

1) buy gauze

2) tape or band aid

3) Always PHYSICALLY disconnect your computer from the internet and from a power source (annoying as heck but we have to do what we have to do)

May Allah swt protect us from all evils in this world and the next. ameen.

I have an unhealthy love for the Converse ALL STARS aka Chuck Taylor, always been a fan even if I only own two pairs, one that I purchased in 2001 (subhanaAllah 10 years ago!) and the other this past April 2011. If I could afford to buy more I would but alas its not to be. Alhamdulillah.

I am an even BIGGER fan of second hand stuff because I like reusing, repurposing and recycling A LOT and I like my things to have history. My toddler has a bunch of converses all purchased second hand (pics below I purchased these about 2 yrs ago)

My recent second hand purchases for my 8 month old baby girl and for my toddler...some haven't arrived yet!

^^I just got the black and white chucks and they are *ALMOST* new^^

I usually pick colors that can be worn by both my daughter and son because buying shoes can get expensive and wasteful. The most I spent on a used pair in excellent condition was $15 and that included the shipping and they weren't even worn! The cheapest was $5 WITH shipping. That's the life of toddler shoes, they quickly outgrow them.

I violated this rule with the pink ones but I COULDN'T HELP MYSELF! But I plan on becoming a foster parent so I figured I would end up using these again anyway so all is well. :)

Chucks how I love thee...

btw. the white and green are pretty scruffy but a good wash will fix that plus they were affordable.

You know it! Those maxi dresses are in full bloom and they all seem to be made of jersey fabric and they end up sticking to you, not very hijab friendly. Not to worry! I suggest getting a sheer maxi full length dress liner even though it may not match the top of your maxi dress it doesn't matter since your hijab and cardigan will be covering that area...right? right? But of course you already knew that. ;) This style of slip will only work on a dress style.

I would use the full length slips for the following maxis.

How about the jumper maxi? you can separate the two and get a top and a shorts slip that reaches the knees or one that reaches the ankles

I found this dress and loved it! I mean GORGEOUS, it looks like it would be comfortable in the summer and easy to nurse in. I am also obsess with converse chucks so I HAD to add them (sorry) and yes, I wear them with abayas. Its out of my price range, alhamdulillah.

The cardigan is too short for a hijab friendly outfit so this look needs to be modified, I didn't change it because I liked it so much.

MPS Awareness

Yesterday I attended a local MPS Awareness event and ended up buying lots of toys, foam alphabets, kufis and a HUGE white skirt. All proceeds were donated to a local charity that helps families dealing with MPS. It was the first time I had ever heard of MPS so It was very educational and heartbreaking at the same time. I met a local family with two daughters diagnosed and they left me amazed. SubhanaAllah. It helped me put things in to perspective and I added them to my list of du'as as well as organizations to keep my eyes on.

You have that shiny new laptop with all the bells and whistles including a webcam and you are all like, "ama be a youtube star!" Hold your horses.

A Philadelphia-area school district finds itself under scrutiny after remotely activating a MacBook Web cam and capturing a young student engaging in "improper behavior at home." The student was confronted by a Harrington High School official and shown photographs of his actions. These photographs set off privacy alarms and have led to a class-action lawsuit alleging that the school district has been spying on its students in their homes. (read more here)

Did a School Use Webcams to Spy on Students at Home?

Now for most people that would probably be no problem but what if you are a hijabi or a niqabi? Its not like we sit in front of our computers at home fully covered. What if you are sporting a tank top or much less? What if it captures you and your husband and people start forwarding that? (the Muslim sex tape),

Viruses, programs, ex-spouses, jealous boyfriends (even though you shouldn't be dating), bullies at school or other mean spirited people can activate your webcam and see you while you are using your computer. Because I think I may need it some day I haven't deactivated the driver for the webcam (I mean seriously someone can activate it remotely anyway). What I have done is put gauze and put a bandaid on it. That way even if they do activate it, there is no image and if I choose to use the webcam then I can remove the gauze and use it with my hijab AND niqab on. (the gauze goes OVER the camera lense and the bandaid OVER the gauze so no glue damages the camera)

It may not be the 'techiest' solution but it works! Also some laptops are equipped to record audio so I suggest that once you are done using the lap top turn it off, unplug it from the internet and if possible remove the battery so that it isn't accessed wirelessly.

Alhamdulillah. I wasn't really worried about the fringe fanatics trying to incite violence by burning the Qur'an since its the proper way of disposing of such a beautiful and holy book anyways. I also didn't feel that they deserved to be mentioned by name as to not increase their notoriety but I decided to post the below statement from Lupe Fiasco because it is so true. WE really need to stop being so reactionary and be more proactive in how the community sees us and how we interact with the community at large as well.

I started wearing these beauties because they were cute, unique and above all only $2. I KNOW! I bought them in all the colors available. After maybe 6 months my whole school was wearing them so they weren't as unique any more but they were still $2 so I kept buying them. I haven't seen them around lately but I checked them out on Amazon and was sorely disappointed in the prices. After looking around for a while I am considering buying this 6 pairs for $26.99 with taxes and shipping it will probably come out to $5-6. Should I get them? I am having trouble finding affordable flats to wear with my skirts. The other China doll slippers are going for $10 and up without shipping so they have been eliminated.

I am a shoe fanatic and I LOVE to virtually shoe shop. I hate the stores because I can't seem to find the variety, no parking or large crowds, but the intertubes cure that for me. Downside is that I can't try on the shoe before I buy it but hey, sometimes all I need is some eye candy. Here is what I found so far :)

I was browsing through my FB main page when I noticed one of my friends was tagged in an image and usually I ignore those but the abaya in that pic caught my attention. OMG. GORGEOUS abayas! The store is Hawa and they are based in Indonesia. Some of the abayas were priced at $37 but most where $30 and under. I took some of the images so we can drool together.

The Maxi Slip

Beginning next week is the slip week. What is a slip you ask? Well since you asked,

a slip is a woman's undergarment worn beneath a dress or skirt to help it hang smoothly and to prevent chafing of the skin from coarse fabrics such as wool.

Since this is maxi season I have seen a lot of sisters rock some beautiful dresses but the jersey material makes them cling to their bodies in a not so modest way. Solution? a slip. I remember that in El Salvador the women would not go outside without wearing some form of slip but when I came to the states its like no one has ever heard of them. The closest I got to an answer was the slip dress which is just a lingerie inspired dress.

Anyway the following should help you out in choosing one. If you are NOT planning on wearing anything underneath your maxi to reduce heat stroke you can check out this full length slip. It may be worth as much as a maxi on sale but it will save you some embarrassment at the masjid. iA.

I have been looking recently at plus size clothing lines because with my pregnant belly I can't fit in to my regular clothes and am not too keen on most (there are exceptions) maternity lines. Maybe it was because I wasn't looking for it before but I have recently noticed that the plus size section is getting trendy and stylish clothes. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the elastic waistband in skirts, you can't really tell that its there but its way more comfortable than the zippers and am loving it!

I was always more of a military girl until the last couple of years and I can't get enough of pinks and frilly stuff. GAWD I never thought that would happen but it has. Here are my favorite thus far that I will be using in sets

I REALLY like this look but I think it looks better on smaller chested women. Otherwise your girls will be in people's faces like its nobody's business. ;)

Unfortunately I can't take pics of myself and post them online and my mannequin is still in storage so you guys have to use your imagination. The skirt was $16 at walmart and the organic cotton smocked halter dress (also from walmart) was $9. Since am pregnant these smocked dresses have been HEAVEN plus I used them as extra long tunics. I have NOT found an affordable cardigan yet but I am still searching. I instead used a jean jacket (dark and very nice) to cover up the arms. I wore a black hijab because it is one of the most breathable ones I have and I paired it with a half niqab and a black and white under piece. I looked good let me tell you. OH, and the purse was this hobo style black with camel handles for $10!

My shoes left a lot to be desired but all my pairs are in storage and am too broke to be buying new ones. Ladies I think this is on the top of my list of my favorite outfits. I STILL don't have a camera so dang it am behind on everything. BUT never fear am saving up to buy one so you guys can see my outfits. :)

ps. btw the dress OVER the skirt left a nice band of color underneath and it looked pretty cool. I got a lot of compliments even though I wore it to just hang out at a friends house. Whatcha think?

Believe it or not that striped tunic is ONLY $7.95 (at least while supplies last) and I decided to use this professional flamenco skirt with it. I have this new obsession with tubular hijabs (see this post) so I HAD to add it here as well. I think you might need an amira hijab underneath made off very thin material to keep your neck from being exposed but other than that I think this is good to go.

I know there is a difference of opinion whether the feet need to be covered or not. I am of the opinion that they should although I am still doing some more research on it since I was only informed of the ruling but not given any proofs. So what do you gals think?

In response to some clerics comments that earthquakes happen because of the female body some women (although I suspect a guy somewhere in there) started boobquake. Yes, they will bare it all to scientifically prove that women do not cause earthquakes. Really Einstein? You are not liberating the female gender by going topless. NO, you are NOT. Check this comment out from a woman claiming that if we DON'T bare it all WE are pathologizing sexuality.

I don't buy the bs and secondly I don't think these women understand sexuality much. There is just way too much compelling evidence on why earthquakes happen as well as mention of it in the Qur'an. But oh GOD does that sound boring, so why go through with it when we can have more fun naked?

Ignorance trying to debunk ignorance grab a bucket of popcorn people! This should be fun!

I don't even know the name of the Arab (I think) actress who recently became a hijabi I also don't care to find out her name nor google her for images. All the hijab fashion blogs were ablazed when she decided to cover up more and that is how I found out about it. Anyway, I got a friends request from some hijab store who had her (the actress) as their profile pic. Unless she is wearing the brand of hijab you sell or you have paid her to be your stores' spokesperson it is dishonest to use her pic (false advertising). Although that is a side issue. My biggest issue is that this particular store's profile pic is of the actress turned hijabi on the left and a picture of her NOT wearing the hijab on the right.(on the same pic) What the heck? WHY? To prove she didn't wear it before and now she does? and therefore you should too?

She is a hijabi NOW so use one of her in a hijab. You are kinda defeating her hijab a little. Yeah, she allowed those pictures to be taken of her before (although not the same can be said about the ones taken by the paparazzos) but she now wants to make a change and you guys aren't letting her. geez. Some of the hijab fashion blogs were also showing pics of her not wearing a hijab and wearing one in the same post! This bothered me because as a convert am sure there are pics of me somewhere without hijab and now that I am a hijabi I would appreciate VERY much if they weren't used. Aren't they defeating the purpose of the hijab that we preach about night and day?

Show respect people and start using the picture of her wearing a hijab SPECIALLY if you are writing about hijab. Because despite what you may be writing or hadith quote you are using, you say more about your stance (or confusion) of hijab with just that one photo. Is there more to hijab than the physical scarf around our heads?

I had a new initiative with a couple of sisters I know. After seeing how successful HalfDate had become (another awesome sadaqah promotion site) we decided to do the same but focus on women's issues. Not too long ago my friends and I removed a sister from a dangerous and abusive situation and as we were looking for help we realized that there was virtually none. There are even fewer resources for non-profits and other organizations that help Muslim women and we want to help them flourish. So every month we will focus a deserving non-profit and their project and help them achieve their goal whether it be monetary, du'as or with items like canned goods or coats for the winter.

There is either modest or immodest clothing, tight or loose, comfortable or uncomfortable but nothing per se "Islamic." Clothing may conform to the Islamic code of morality and hijab but that is about it. When the Prophet (saw) came with revelation he didn't bring a new set of clothing with him, never before worn by a previous people. Rather, from my weak understanding, they took from the clothing that was readily available and wore it modestly.

I think you can dress modestly and still abide by the rules of hijab by simply wearing loose and modest clothing and by matching your actions to the rules as well. I am getting tired of people trying to figure out my identity. I DO NOT HAVE AN IDENTITY CRISIS!

I know I am a Muslim who loves her niqab and wears whatever is available to her that is still hijab. I am not Arab, Arab wannabe, Asian or Asian wannabe. So get off that already! Because I don't think any one race or country has a patent on their national garb. If I like it, I wear it. If you can't handle that then that is your hang ups you are trying to pin on the rest of us.

I can't remember where I read it but it said that we are a reflection of others. The very thing you hate in the person in front of you is the very thing you hate in yourself but you are in denial. So if you insist I have an identity issue than all you are really admitting is YOU don't know who the heck you are.

Because I know EXACTLY who I am.

I mean ANYTHING? buy clothes that fit you. Yes, that simple! Don't buy clothes for the future when you loose that extra five pounds or gain them. Since my first pregnancy I still weigh 143lbs, 10lbs over my pre pregnancy weight and I have been in the dumps about it. I have bags of clothes that no longer fit me and I have been wearing my husbands sweatpants and sweatshirts. As a result I look like a sloppy stereotypical mom who happens to wear a niqab and it is not the image I would like to portray. I mean I am only 24 years old and there is no reason for me to have all these body image issues right now or ever!

I really didn't realized how much of a difference wearing clothes that fit had on your whole well being until yesterday. I haven't purchased any skirts, tunics, abayas or even niqabs in the past 3 years! and that also extends to the intimates. I know tmi! Anyway, I bough 59 pairs of underwear (all kinds) and cute ankle socks among other items and OMG. ITS AWESOME!

I mean I actually like the way I look in them and although we can't afford for me to get a brand new wardrobe we are putting money a side so I can start dressing more appropriately. Yay! Once I get a camera (my first EVER!) I will start taking pcs of what I wear. I hope that , inshaAllah, it will motivate me to dress a little better. I feel like a total different person and all I did was to wear clothes that fit me. Not soo baggy that I look like I am homeless and wearing everything I own or so tight that it is not even hijab.

I think Muhammad Alshareef mentioned in a previous speech that you should appreciate how you look right now. Yeah I want to go back to my pre pregnancy bod but there is someone out there who's goal is to be my current weight. Like they say, the grass is always greener on the other side. I think the grass is greener wherever you are because we live in the present not the future nor the past. alhamdulillah

DUDE! If I was still in school and in the area I would join... ahem out of curiosity of course. Anyway, I LOVE sisterhood and all the sororities I looked in to in college were a little catty to say the least. Their motto is “sisterhood, scholarship, leadership and community service” doesn't seem so out of the ordinary.

The sorority started in 2005 and has five chapters in the areas surrounding Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, and the national headquarters in Alexandria, Va. Each chapter is regional rather than school-based and pulls from multiple colleges. Atlanta’s members have attended Spelman, Clark Atlanta University, Georgia Perimeter College and other institutions.

What?! WOW. I didn't realized that the niqab had mystical powers that immediately removes all shreds of individuality once its put on. WOW. I think niqabs should come packaged with a warning like cigarettes and alcohol do. Men should really stick to politics and leave what we wear or not wear alone. The economy is in shambles everywhere but lets focus on the small group of women who actually wear niqab. HOW they got elected is beyond me.

I was moderating one of my many facebook pages and this video was passed along. I am still listening to it but again I am still in awe of non Muslim women wearing the hijab. Up until a couple of months ago when I started getting involved in blogging I didn't know that other women covered up. I knew Jewish and Christian women were told to cover but people interpret it and practice it their own way I didn't realize they covered almost exactly like us and even used the same terminology. MashaAllah for them as I find hijab a beautiful aspect of Islam and if they want to adopt it so be it. Who am I to judge?

I also like how she expresses herself and it makes SO much sense. People will ALWAYS find an excuse to victimize others. Whether it is through religion, science (the Bronx zoo once had a black man caged as an exhibit), culture, childhood traumas or what have you. So far I like the video, enjoy.

So I was thinking of taking a daily picture of what I wear and post it on my blog. The thing is though that I am a niqabi so I wonder if Hijab Life is the right place to do it or if I should start an additional blog for it. I realized that because I am a mom of a toddler I dress messy both indoors and out doors and that should NOT be an excuse.

I feel that we give dawah in many ways and having a messy exterior makes your job a little harder. I also noticed I am happier when am presentable. I want to share and get feedback as well as having fun with my wardrobe again. Last time that happened I was a non Muslim reveling in my abs. Now am kinda on the pudgy side but not for long ladies! not for long!

I still haven't made up my mind so any suggestions would be awesome

If I had the guts to wear colors this is what I would wear. I usually always end up in dark colors but that is because of laundry issues. nuff said. I am in love with the Anne Rice's vampires. Vampires in general but I prefer her vampires as opposed to the 'newer' high-tech ones. I was watching her masterpiece Interview with a Vampire and I couldn't help but notice Claudia's wardrobe. I had noticed before but the last time I was a non Muslim and really didn't pay much attention to it but NOW it was giving me inspirations for abayas. Wouldn't they look magnificent?

I am trying to take pictures of the dresses and turn them in to sketches. I may not be able to launch my clothing line any time soon but I am definitely building my stash.

This outfit is almost hijabi PERFECT. It is from Missoni and I have NO idea from what season it is let alone what year. All I know is that I stumbled upon it as I was looking for layered scarf look and did a double take. Bikini or Niqab?

Disclaimer: I am a happy niqabi who occasionally wears a mini skirt underneath my abaya, but don't tell anyone ;).

Bikini or Niqab? Burqa or miniskirt? dunking donuts or starbucks? That seems to the question women are commonly asked. As a woman I don't think they should be questions at all. Why make an option so polarizing? It doesn't need to be most of us already now what constitutes hijab and the rulings behind it. NO need to bash someone in the head nor limit their choice.

I think most people ARE trying to guide people to proper hijab but we forget that there is free will and we aren't meant to be a haraam police. I think writing about proper hijab is ok. What I don't think is ok is to bash sisters in person or online or to use their pictures to demonstrate 'good' hijab versus 'bad' hijab. I know we are supposed to enjoin the good and forbid the evil but we need to do it with understanding and kindness.

Bad Hijab Transformation

This outfit although cute is not very hijab friendly and should really only be worn inside the house. There are two ways I can think of hijabifying this outfit via abaya or a wrap skirt and still wear it outside.

Wrap skirts can help you hide nearly everything not too hijab friendly. :) If you are not sure what a wrap skirt is, it's basically a long rectangle with strings at the end that you wrap around your waist and use the strings to tie it in place. The following is a simple example.

Here is how I would hide the skinny jeans

This is the easy way out and I just added an abaya to hide it.

This is a Gerard Darel dress and I think it would make an awesome abaya. I think it is a very versatile and can be used as a maternity dress without looking frumpy or too old. Most of the ideas for my clothing line actually include dresses like this one and I even modified one so that it can be used by nursing mothers with ease and without velcro.

Shaolin Hijabi Inspiration

I was watching a documentary not too long ago about the Shaolin fighting monks and I LOVED their outfits and their fighting skills. I think the garb itself is religious and supposedly the orange is only worn by Buddhist monks but I am no expert. Either way I thought the outfit was super cool PLUS it was so baggy it was hijabi friendly. The cool looking boots although awesome looking, would probably expose too much of the shape.

The Closet of the Working Hijabi

This is for the working Hijabi. I chose dark and neutral colors so you could mix and match them and add spunk to your outfit by adding colorful accessories or by your hijab. This would be my base for a my work clothes outfit.

You could have at least 2 trousers that are suitable for work. I prefer dark colors personally so but you could have livelier colors.

I think skirts should also be part of o hijabi's work wardrobe. I was going to pick

I LOVE looking back and seeing the style of yesterdays when fashion was fashion and modesty was priced. ah memories or at the very least images that I google and get melancholic and fawn over. I grew up hearing about La Doña aka Maria Felix. I think she was incredibly beautiful, talented and for the most part had a very stylish and modest way of dressing.

I love black and white photography and she is beautiful captured here. I LOVE the hijabi look on her albeit not full hijab. Growing up in El Salvador I saw A LOT of women dressed like this and it was during the mid 80's till early 90's. When I went back in 2005 I saw less of them but they still had the grace I remember.

Flower Prints to cheer me up

I am upset right now and I can't help how I feel. I have been following some blogs and just the content that they have brings me down. I am going to stop following them because it is negatively affecting me. Anyway, I am getting closer to my goal to attend FIT so Alhamdulillah. I still would love it if you guys made duah for me. Duas are ALWAYS welcomed. I have NO idea how I am going to make it but I am NOT lying. Although I live a stones throw from Manhattan I don't qualify for instate tuition which means I have to pay 5x the going rate for tuition. Originally I was going to get one of my family members to let me use their address so I can save money but wouldn't that be lying?

Being a patternmaker and starting my own clothing are very important for me why start by lying? That being said the tuition will now be unaffordable and that's where YOU come in. Make dua that Allah swt finds me away to go back to school without debt, without needing to lie and without interest (usury, riba).

I have seen a lot of blogs about hijab fashion and what constitutes hijab and what is a hijab no no. I also noticed that in order to prove a point a picture of a sister who is not dress properly is used. I think that is disrespectful and we shouldn't do that. Personally I would be so devastated if I were to see one of my pictures from when I took my shahada out there for display. We should encourage sisters to dress properly but not with ridicule.

We use sites like polyvore to make hijabi sets but why can't we use them to create the 'look' that is a no no? we should also add a note to it though otherwise ppl might think its ok.

Like skinny jean phenomena happening you could use a set above instead of using an ACTUAL hijabi and as a result humiliating the sister. After all what is the purpose of your post in the end? t o educate sister to proper hijab or to be fodder for backbiting?

Pakistan Fashion Week

For some reason I can't find enough samples of the designs presented last week in Pakistan 's first ever Fashion week. This is the best I could do or at least pieces I found that were hijabi friendly. I am kinda disappointed that there weren't a lot of modest clothing to go around. I hope it is because there aren't enough pictures for us to pour over. Because I feel that they had an opportunity to be unique I hope they didn't go down the same road as other fashion shows. I guess maybe next year they will have more variety to choose from or more photographers. InshaAllah.

I was looking at Dubai Fashion Week and accidentally landed on a page promoting Swahili Fashion Week. I LOVE fashion and love to see how creative and innovative people from all over the globe can be.
